Choir Camps

With all the information I posted a couple weeks ago, I’ve had some interest in vocal music camps.  I’ve done a little digging and here’s what I’ve found.  The information on these groups is taken directly from their web pages which I’ve linked to below.  If you’d like more information on any of these groups, please let me know.

Minneapolis Youth Chorus

Launched by the Minnesota Chorale in 2007, the Minneapolis Youth Chorus is an auditioned ensemble open to Minneapolis Public School students in grades 4 through 9. Minneapolis Youth ChorusMYC seeks to enrich the lives of participants by providing them with opportunities to develop their musical gifts in an environment dedicated to the celebration of diversity and the pursuit of artistic excellence. The program is offered at no charge to participants: all costs are borne by the Minnesota Chorale.

MYC rehearses on Thursday afternoons from 4:45 to 6:30 p.m., and one Saturday morning per month during the school year. A one-week “choir camp” takes place during the summer, daily from 9 a.m. to noon, for new and returning singers. Admission to the chorus takes place via voice checks, scheduled this year for April 16 & 23 at Jefferson Community School, Minneapolis.

For more information about MYC, please contact conductor Patrice Arasim via email by >> clicking here.

The Minneapolis Youth Chorus is a Community Partner of the Minneapolis Public Schools.

Sing Minnesota (check out their website for a really informative video)

Sing Minnesota 2010 from United Filmworks on Vimeo.

Sing Minnesota is a week-long day camp for kids who are excited about experiences in the arts. While focusing on choral singing, campers also participate in other creative arts—drama and movement, visual arts, as well as plenty of outdoor fun and games. Sing Minnesota is hosted by Saint Paul’s Concordia University, which offers spacious rehearsal rooms, comfortable working space for visual art and a lovely space where our final performance will take place each session.

Sing Minnesota is open to girls and boys who have completed grades 2-6 (ages 8-12). Camp runs one week, Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The camp culminates in a performance for friends and families on Friday afternoon that showcases the campers. To ensure this artistic opportunity is available to all children, the Bridget McCarthy Scholarship Fund was established to honor the memory of the Twin Cities singer, actress and teacher for whom it is named. To apply for a scholarship, please check the appropriate box on the registration form. An application will be mailed to you.

Twin Cities Girls Chorus

Spend the summer SINGING! The Twin Cities Girls Chorus is thrilled to be holding our sixth annual Summer Music Camp, and we invite you to join in this exciting and affordable opportunity for your aspiring musician. TCGC Sing Out! Summer Music Camp is open to all girls entering grades 2-10 in Fall 2012. Camp participants learn songs and dances from around the world as they develop important musical skills in an engaging creative, and social environment. At the end of the week, camp participants put on an amazing concert for friends and family.

Minnesota Opera’s Project Opera

This opportunity isn’t a summer camp, but rather an activity that follows the school calendar fairly closely.  It’s a fantastic opportunity for those i

nterested in opera. Here’s the information from the website:

The Ensembles

  • Ragazzi is a mixed group of talented singers in grades 4-7. They explore the world of opera and choral music, develop skills in multi-part singing, and the basics in performing in foreign languages.
  • Giovani is a mixed group made up of students in grades 8-12 who perform primarily in a choral music setting. Participants develop the fundamentals of solo singing, basic acting skills and perform in the chorus of an age-appropriate opera in the spring with the Apprentices.
  • Apprentices, a mixed group of advanced students in grades 8-12 who develop skills in solo singing, stage presence, advanced language skills, and more. Students will perform an age-appropriate opera in the spring along with Giovani.

Led by Music Director Dale Kruse, participants work closely with Minnesota Opera and other local artists.

  • Ragazzi – Saturdays (8:30-10:30 am)
  • Giovani – Saturdays (11:00 am-2:00 pm)
  • Apprentices – Saturday (2:30 pm-4:30 pm)

The Project Opera season starts in September and runs through May and generally follows the school calendar.
